South Congress has long been one of Austin's premier areas for style, activity, food, and shopping. Also known as SoCo, South Congress is also the home of Allens Boots' location in Austin. In fact, Allens Boots is a bit of a South Congress landmark due to its heritage... and due to the giant red boot on our roof!
Other famous South Congress landmarks include the costume paradise "Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds and Electric Ladyland," New Bohemia, Uncommon Objects, Guero's, Mars, Zen, Jo's Coffee Shop, the Magnolia Cafe, and Amy's Ice Cream. Lucy in Disguise supposedly was one of Bob Dylan's South Congress destinations when he was shopping for retro clothes. New Bohemia provides clothes and furnishings with a retro flair. Uncommon Objects is full of funky and stylish home decorating items.
And food? South Congress boasts some of Austin's most treasured eateries. The inexpensive Tex-Mex delights at Guero's Taco Bar, served in the renovated building once known as the Austin Seed & Feed, have been known to attract celebrities and musicians, especially during Austin's event-packed South by Southwest and Austin City Limits festivals. Zen provides healthy Asian dishes and rice bowls, and the South Congress hungry also frequent Jo's for java and coffee shop fare in an open-air setting. And who could forget the comfort-food-meets-granola goodness of the Magnolia or the rich, cool treats at Amy's Ice Cream?
Last but not least, South Congress is synonymous with First Thursday, a tradition when the shops and restaurants on South Congress throw open their doors to evening passersby. The South Congress parking lots fill with vendors and food trailers, musicians come out to play on the sidewalks, and everyone ambles through the neighborhood enjoying the sights, sounds, and flavors. Come on down to South Congress and stop by Allens Boots!
